What type of fasteners are recommended for tile roofs?

What type of fasteners are recommended for tile roofs?

Fasteners should be stainless steel, copper, aluminum or hot-dipped galvanized steel, but not electroplated. Anytime you walk a clay tile roof, you risk breaking tiles. The resistance to breakage varies with the tile’s quality, profile and condition.

What are hanging tiles?

Vertical tiling, also referred to as ’tile hanging’, is the practice of installing roof tiles to vertical walls as a cladding solution.

Can you render a dormer?

You can install render carrier boards, or structural insulated panels (sips) and then render on top, either with an acrylic render, silicone enhanced or cement based scratch coat. Any movement should be accommodated by flashings etc so water ingress should never be a problem.

Do roof tiles need to be nailed down?

For all roof areas and rafter pitches, every tile should be mechanically fixed with at least a nail, a clip, or a combination of these options that provide adequate combined resistance to the wind uplift loads on the tiles.

Do you nail every roof tile?

It is not necessary to nail every single tile to the battens. Every tile of the two rows at the eaves, those up the verges, and along the two rows of the ridge should be nailed, but beyond that it is only necessary to nail every fifth tile horizontally and every third tile as you move up the roof.

What is Renderboard?

Render carrier boards, sometimes referred to as sheathing boards, are typically made from cement boards, cement particle (CP) boards, magnesium oxide (MgO) boards or even gypsum. Render carrier boards provide a durable backing surface for thin coat render systems to be applied to.

Can I render over plywood?

The render mix cannot be applied directly to the plywood, as wood is not an ideal substrate for cement render. The best course of action is to prepare the surface, then install a breather membrane onto your plywood, then install timber battens and render carrier boards on top.
