100th Anniversary. One hundred years ago, on 24 August 1921, the huge airship HMA R38 was spectacularly wrecked over the River Humber at Hull, in front of large crowds. The airship had been sold to the US Navy, which was expanding its fleet of rigid airships, and she was to become the USN’s ZR-2.
Why did R38 crash?
The R. On 24 August 1921, R. 38 (designated ZR-2 by the USN) was destroyed by a structural failure while in flight over the city of Hull. It crashed into the Humber Estuary, killing 44 out of the 49 crew aboard.
