Gerstle Cove Campground is open year-round, while Woodside is only open April through early September. Gerstle Cove is first-come, first-served October through mid-March. There is also a Group Campsite at Gerstle Cove Campground and 10 Hike & Bike campsites located separate from the two campgrounds.
Can you swim at Saltpoint State Park?
It has four access points to a rugged yet picturesque rocky shoreline. Tide pools are more abundant here than sand is, but if you are seeking a sandy beach this park has one and it’s in gorgeous Stump Beach Cove. Three of the coastal access points have day-use parking areas with restrooms and picnic tables.

What is Salt Point?
The salt point is the temperature at which the partial pressure of the salt forming contaminants such as ammonia or amines and HCl exceeds their equilibrium limit (Kp). Some amine chloride salts will be above there melt point at crude overhead conditions, and they tend to cause very aggressive corrosion when they form.

Park at Shell Beach parking lot. You will need to cross Highway 1 to get to the trailhead. Start the hike by climbing up the graveled fire road to the Pomo Canyon/Red Hill junction.
How did Salt Point get its name?
Salt Point is named for the tafoni where the ocean water crystallizes in the honeycomb like crevices. This tafoni is caused when the salt crystals interact with the sandstone making parts of the sandstone harden while other parts soften.
