The Navy Reserve is a valued partner of the Navy’s active-duty component. It offers citizens the chance to serve on a part-time basis, training near home until called to Active Duty. A reservist can pursue a full-time civilian education or career, or obtain special military training while serving.
To join the Navy Reserve, you must be a U.S. citizen between the ages of 18 and 39. If you plan to join the reserve as an enlisted member, you need a high school diploma. To join as an officer, you need a four-year college degree. In most cases, your drills take place at the Navy Reserve unit closest to you.
Can a reservist be an officer?
All officers in the Air Force Reserve must hold a college degree and be selected to hold a commission. Enlisted personnel may become officers if they earn a bachelor’s degree. If you are a member of Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), you may become a commissioned officer upon graduation.
Compared to other branches, is Navy OCS hard to get in to? The Navy Officer Candidate School is very competitive. A candidate should score high on the Officer Aptitude Rating (OAR) section on the Aviation Standard Test Battery (ASTB). Also, the overall score should be high on the ASTB.
With very few exceptions (mostly for medical professionals), one cannot simply transfer from the Reserves/Guard to active duty. One must get an approved discharge from the Reserve/Guard component and then separately process for enlistment (or commission) for an active duty service.

Officer Candidate School, or Navy OCS, is a 13-week course located at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island. Navy OCS prepares you to assume the responsibilities of a naval officer, and helps you develop to your fullest potential. It includes academic training, memorization, and military and physical fitness training.
Officers are not required to attend boot camp. To receive a commission as an officer, you must have at least a bachelor’s degree in any subject. You will still be required to attend officer training to learn Navy values and the leadership skills you will need as an officer overseeing enlisted sailors.
